It all starts with proper planning. When looking at web projects SEO usually get the short end of the stick before it is even thought about, being placed behind designers, developers and copywriters. In today’s market of the web its all about search engine rankings and search based results. No matter how good your website looks, functions, and reads if you don’t have proper keywords – who is going to see it?

Don’t worry because not all is lost, with a little organization SEO tactics can be implemented into an existing website without messing with the design and functionality. What might some of these tactics be you ask? Well, here is my list of the new trends you can start incorporating to help your rankings in 2011.

Keep up with Google
You can be at the top of Google but if your website looks like a dog’s breakfast majority of people might not even click on it. How so? Well Google just implemented Google Page Preview. So if your site or blog doesn’t look appealing, searchers might not click on you.

Social Media Marketing
Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, take your pick but you need to live in them. Developing a credible and strong profile in each. The more you can stir up in social networking sites, the greater your prospects will improve.

Mobile Ready
If your site can’t be viewed on the hottest of smart phone technologies, it is time to rethink your experience.

Alt Tags
Alt Tags are the text that sits behind your images. From what I have seen, this could be playing a bigger role in the Google Algorithm. So overhaul all your image alt tags with richer keywords.

Blog
Not much of a new trend, but a very important element. Every website should have a blog. Not only is this a great way for you to keep your visitors coming back, but it also keeps your content fresh. This is what search engines like Google love. Fresh content. Just remember to use keywords in it.

By no means are these solutions to getting high ranks, however if you combine these with the basics of SEO, then you will definitely see improvements.

This is the battle of Apple vs Adobe. Maybe the safe title should have been – Are you mobile friendly? I am not sure if HTML5 vs. Flash should even be compared, as they are two totally different things and not equal opponents. HTML5 is a language specification and Flash is a software. There has been a ton of debate on this over the past year or so mainly thanks to Apple and their lack of interest in supporting Flash in the iPhone and iPad. The war between the two is over rich media (streaming audio and video). Flash is the pioneer and have owned the rich media market up until the recent emergence of HTML5 and its support of streaming audio and video. This is the reason for the buzz. Although it looks as though Apple is cutting ties with Flash support in its smartphone products, Adobe is definitely supporting the emergence of the technology. Here is a link to Adobe’s Campaign ‘We Love Choice’.

One can not replace the other, at least not now, but that all depends on the need for the application. I believe we still need both. HTML5 replaces a lot of what Flash didn’t need to do in the first place. That being said, HTML5 has yet to achieve some of the beautiful fluid flowing design elements that Flash allows. For that reason they need each other. If that changes I will be sure to write a new piece.

The main problem with Flash is that it doesn’t ‘play nice’ with the hottest of Apple’s portable technologies (cough cough iPhone and iPad). With the emergence of portable devices many have turned to creating website redirects to dedicated device specific sites. It is one thing to create a beautiful web experience, but if you are cutting corners and stripping down your site just to have a mobile presence, you might be hurting your brand more than you think. Unless your website is optimized for a broad spectrum of devices, you have yet to step into the NOW. Many have predicted that smartphones PDAs will sell out personal computers. Be sure your design meets the needs of today’s customers. It is all about mobile, people don’t wait to go home to check you out – they are doing it the very instant they think about it or make a connection. Make sure you’re ready for them!

Once in awhile throughout your life events happen that change everything. In the blink of an eye something you were so sure of – no longer makes sense. I thought I would take a moment to write my first post on the new website to remember a friend, colleague, and brilliant artist. Daniel Guido.

I had the pleasure of knowing Daniel for 19 years. We were cousins by law, but by nature there was a deeper bond. He was a gifted artist who expressed his love, passion and talent through music, painting, graphic design, photography, sculpture, and clothes. He was a tremendous help in delivering the first version of b&m models website back in 2002. I never thought for a moment that I would be sitting here and writing about his passing. To be completely honest I never thought about anything that didn’t involve what was happening in my immediate radius. Daniel passed August 29th 2004. That day’s events repeat over and over in my head from time to time. However, this is not a sad note, but a positive one and with time dark always turns to light.

If there is one positive that has come to light from this tragedy, it is just being appreciative for everything and anything you receive from someone and cherishing every moment as its your last. The word that sums this all up is ‘gratitude’. I know its easier said than done and its unfortunate it takes a tragedy like this to open ones eyes but it has been nearly 7 years since I last saw Daniel and my eyes have never been more open. Every breath I take is completely fresh and new, setting off a new charge throughout myself and in the most positive way of saying this I owe this all to you Daniel! My message is clear and I am sure if he were here to speak it would be the same, everything is there for the taking. Only you are capable of setting restrictions that stop you from doing something. Seize the Day (Carpe Diem).

Daniel has been long from forgotten. We have created many tributes to him, pressed CD of his DJ set (if you are reading this and would like a copy let me know). We took his DJ Turntable Needle all over Europe and had various DJ’s at various night clubs play with his needle and then finally buried his turntable needle in Ibiza. It was an aspiration of his to go to Ibiza and play music there one day. We also created and built a 800 lb steel cross memorial in his name. Some of us have taken tributes to the flesh, getting various tattoos in his memory. Even to this day the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) has a scholarship set up for first year students, called the “Daniel Guido Memorial Scholarship” which is sponsored generously by his immediate family.

Daniel was a special soul, who had the uncanny ability to brighten your day no matter how terrible. He was always smiling and laughing no matter how thick it got. Today I do my best to bring that smile and laughter into my life and others. One thing is for sure Daniel, everyday that passes, you inspire me more and more.

Thank you.
